Everything you need to know about secured loans NZ
Borrowing against an asset does not have to mean settling for whatever rate you are offered first. NeedCashToday reviews your situation and your asset, then matches you to the lender most likely to approve you at a competitive rate.
What is a secured loan and how does it work?
A secured loan is a personal loan backed by an asset, most commonly a vehicle, property, boat or equipment. The asset acts as collateral, meaning if you default on the loan, the lender has the legal right to repossess it to recover the outstanding debt. Because the lender's risk is reduced by the security, secured loans typically offer lower interest rates and access to higher borrowing amounts than unsecured alternatives. For borrowers with an eligible asset, a secured loan is usually the most cost-effective way to borrow. Terms usually range from 6 to 84 months.
Secured vs unsecured loans, which is better?
The right choice depends on whether you have an eligible asset and how important the interest rate is to you. Secured loans offer lower rates and higher limits, but your asset is at risk if you cannot meet repayments. Unsecured loans carry no asset risk, but lenders charge higher rates to compensate for the additional exposure. Secured loans on our panel start from 8.99% p.a. (AIR), while unsecured borrowing starts from 10.99%. For most borrowers with a vehicle or property, a secured loan will result in meaningfully lower total interest paid over the life of the loan.
What assets can be used as security in NZ?
Lenders on our panel accept a wide range of assets including vehicles (cars, utes, vans), property equity, motorbikes, boats and watercraft, campervans, commercial equipment and in some cases term deposits or savings accounts. The asset must either be owned outright or have sufficient equity, meaning its value is meaningfully greater than any existing finance. The type and condition of the asset affects both the lender's willingness to lend and the rate they will offer. Newer, higher-value assets in good condition typically attract the most competitive terms.
Why use a matching service instead of applying direct?
Applying to several lenders directly can damage your credit score because each hard enquiry leaves a mark on your file. NeedCashToday runs a soft credit check only, which does not affect your score. We then present your application to the single most suitable lender on our panel for your situation, reducing the risk of rejection and protecting your credit profile. You can read more about how credit reporting works through bureaus like Centrix.

Can I get a secured loan if there is already finance on my asset?
Yes, in some cases. If there is existing finance on your asset, some lenders will still consider it as security provided there is sufficient equity. For example, if your vehicle is worth $25,000 and you owe $8,000 on it, you have $17,000 of equity that a lender may be willing to work with. The specifics depend on the lender, the asset type and the amount you are looking to borrow. We assess your situation in full before approaching any lender, so apply and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
What protections do I have as a borrower?
Lenders and brokers in NZ are bound by the responsible lending principles in the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003. Section 9C sets out the lender responsibility principles, including making reasonable inquiries so the loan meets your requirements and that you can repay without substantial hardship. The Commerce Commission enforces these rules, and the Financial Markets Authority oversees financial services more broadly.
